Shayla Sackinger’s work is inspired by the things around her. Growing up in nature with pet chickens, it is no wonder that those are the subjects that appear the most in her work. Combine that with personal interests like video games and storytelling and that is her work in a nutshell. She does most of her work in traditional ink and watercolor medium, but she also works in other mediums like oils and photoshop. She knew she wanted to be an artist back in 2011, but she states her work wasn’t focused and that she had no idea what she wanted to do. In the summer of 2015 she started studying art at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and that got her on track to where her art is today. She says learning from the professors helped her figure out what she likes to draw, what mediums she wants to use, and also what she wanted to do in the future. By 2018 she had taken classes from each professor and felt the need to broaden her perspective on art. She decided to study abroad in Tokyo, Japan for a year and it helped her grow not only as an artist, but as a person too. She met many people and developed an interest in creating and illustrating her own stories. That is where she is currently. She has finally graduated with a Bachelor’s in Art and Japanese Studies and is currently working as a part-time graphic designer. Looking to the future, she says she is only certain that she wants to one day be a part of the teams that create the video games and movies that inspired her.
